Tampa man who crashed into Hillsborough Bay identified, remains critical

TAMPA — The man whose car crashed through the Bayshore Boulevard balustrade Friday night has been identified as 19-year-old Michael Agana.

Agana, of Tampa, remained in critical condition Saturday at Tampa General, police said.

Tampa Fire Rescue said late Friday that the man was not breathing on his own.

Agana was alone in the car when it careened across Bayshore Boulevard, crossed the median, went through the balustrade and landed in Hillsborough Bay, police said.

He was not breathing when he was pulled from the water by police divers about 8:15 p.m.

The silver Toyota Camry was completely submerged after the crash. Several witnesses jumped into the water to rescue Agana, but were unsuccessful, police said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, and witnesses said they did not hear the sounds of tires screeching before the wreck.

An investigation was ongoing Saturday afternoon.
