Tampa officer treated for knee injury after police truck, police SUV collide

TAMPA — A Tampa police officer was treated for a knee injury when his unmarked police truck collided with a patrol SUV while the officers were tracking a stolen car, a police spokesman said.

The crash happened about 12:30 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Linebaugh and Central avenues when an officer in a marked Ford Explorer slowed down to make a left turn, said police spokesman Steve Hegarty. An officer driving an unmarked Ford F-150 did not realize the other officer was going to turn and collided with the side of the Explorer, Hegarty said.

A passenger in the F-150, Officer Edward Knappenberger, was treated for a minor knee injury and released later in the day.

The officers had been tracking a stolen car with the help of a police helicopter when the crash happened. The stolen car was several blocks away and officers were not pursuing it at the time of the crash, Hegarty said.

The driver of the stolen car, 19-year-old Dion M. Mohammed, was arrested after bailing out of the car and running into a house at 5301 Grove Hill Road. He is charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, burglary, resisting an officer without violence, fleeing and attempting to elude police, and driving without a valid driver's license.
