Tampa pilot's name released in Wesley Chapel crash

WESLEY CHAPEL — Authorities have released the name of the pilot who crashed into two parked cars Thursday near Tampa North Aero Park.

Gregory Daryl Johnson, a 59-year-old student pilot from Tampa, was not injured.

Authorities say Johnson had just taken off about 2 p.m. Thursday from the airstrip off old County Road 54, west of Interstate 75, when he ran into trouble and tried to land. He skidded off the runway and into two cars parked outside a medical manufacturing company next to the airport.

It was Johnson's second solo flight. The Federal Aviation Administration is handling the investigation.
