Tampa police reopen Hillsborough Avenue lanes after fuel spill

TAMPA — More than 100 gallons of fuel spilled onto Hillsborough Avenue when a sod truck hit a diesel pump at an abandoned gas station Monday morning, police said.

The spill led police to close lanes around the scene, near 806 E Hillsborough Ave., about 9 a.m. but they were later reopened.

The collision happened as the truck driver attempted to make a U-turn on Hillsborough Avenue, police said. The gas tank broke upon impact, and fuel spilled into the street.

It took more than an hour for officials to clean up the roadway and reopen the street.
