Tampa police search for driver in hit-and-run that injured bicyclist

TAMPA — Police were searching Saturday for the driver of a pickup that struck and severely injured a 22-year-old on a bicycle near E 30th Avenue and N 50th Street early Saturday morning.

The driver fled the scene with damage to the pickup's windshield, a witness told police.

Tampa police have not released the bicyclist's identity, but called his injuries life-threatening.

The cyclist was riding on 50th Street at 3:30 a.m. when the pickup hit him, police said. A witness told police the truck appeared to be old, possibly a Toyota, and either dark blue or black. It had a full-sized bed topper that was taller than the truck's roof, the witness told police.

Police described the driver as a white male with medium-length blond hair and a 5 o'clock shadow.
