Teacher, two students injured in Hillsborough semitrailer crash

TAMPA — An elementary school music teacher and two Blake High School students were injured early Tuesday when a semitrailer truck slammed into their car on Van Dyke Road.

Merritt Tilson, 40, who teaches at Lake Magdalene Elementary School, was headed south about 6:28 a.m. onto Van Dyke Road from a private driveway across from Tobacco Road, according to Hillsborough County deputies. The car moved into the path of a semitrailer that was headed west on Van Dyke Road.

The truck collided with the car, authorities said. Tilson and the two students who were passengers in the car, Alex Tilson and Katherine Stairs, both 15, were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital.

The truck driver was not injured. Deputies were continuing to investigate the crash.
