Three dead in Selmon Expressway crash Thursday afternoon

TAMPA — Three people died in a traffic crash Thursday afternoon that shut down the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway in South Tampa for hours.

A vehicle headed east on the highway lost control a half mile east of the W Euclid Avenue entrance ramp about 4:10 p.m. and veered into the grassy median, Tampa police said. That caused another car from the eastbound lanes to cross the median and enter oncoming traffic. That second car hit two oncoming vehicles before bursting into flames.

All three people inside the car that crossed the median died at the crash scene, investigators said. Their identities were not released by police Thursday night.

The driver of one of the westbound vehicles was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. The occupants of the other westbound vehicle were uninjured.

The first vehicle to enter the median continued east on the Selmon upon regaining control, officers said, and the driver was taken into custody minutes later. It was unclear what charges the driver faces.

The Selmon remained closed between the Euclid and Bay to Bay Boulevard exits through 10 p.m. Thursday.
