TIERRA VERDE — Richard Newhouse was trying to negotiate a U-turn while intoxicated when he lost control of his truck and drove into a marina, authorities said.
The 2010 Toyota Tacoma crossed a grassy median on State Road 679, barrelled through a chain link fence and kept going until it reached the water, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The truck came to rest offshore, almost completely underwater near a dock at the Tierra Verde Marina Resort. The accident happened just before 6 p.m. Monday.
The FHP said Newhouse, 46, of Tierra Verde was not badly injured in the crash. The FHP said his blood-alcohol content was 0.256 — more than three times the level at which the state presumes a driver is impaired.
Newhouse was taken to the Pinellas County Jail and faces a charge of driving under the influence.
