Troopers name two victims of Bartow car-train collision

BARTOW — The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the two people killed Sunday night when their car collided with a train near State Road 37.

Anthony Martin Young, 24, of Mulberry was heading west in a Nissan Pathfinder on Ewell Road about 11:30 p.m. when lights began to flash at a railroad crossing.

Young failed to stop and struck a CSX train with 75 cars and two engines, troopers said earlier this week. After the impact, the Nissan struck a railroad control junction box and caught fire.

Young and his passenger, Eren Randall Askew, 25, of Lakeland died at the scene.

The conductors of the train, Thomas R. Krutulius and Jason Vaughn, both of Tampa, were unhurt.

The Florida Highway Patrol asks anyone who witnessed the crash to call the agency at (863) 413-3510.
