Troopers: man crashed through construction zone, into patrol car

TAMPA — A Tampa man caused major traffic delays when he barrelled into a construction zone Friday morning and hit a Florida Highway Patrol car, troopers said.

Freddie Massie II, 28, was traveling south on Interstate 275 approaching Busch Boulevard about 3:20 a.m. when he failed to stop for the traffic cones and construction barrels that marked the closure of all southbound lanes. Massie didn't exit as directed, troopers said, and collided with an FHP patrol car inside the construction zone.

The trooper was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The crash closed southbound lanes until about 6:30 a.m. Officials diverted traffic off the highway at the Busch Boulevard exit.

Massie had a blood alcohol level of .21, more than twice the legal limit, at the time of the accident, troopers said. He was arrested and charged with DUI with injury, DUI with property damage and violation of construction zone devices.
