Troopers release name of Tampa man killed in May 5 crash

Authorities have identified a man who was killed last week when he was hit by a Jeep in western Hillsborough County.

Edwin G. Gonzalez, 21, was walking south across Hillsborough Avenue about 10:22 p.m. May 5, at the intersection of Race Track Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. At the same time, a Jeep sport utility vehicle was heading west in the inside lane of Hillsborough Avenue.

Gonzalez walked into the path of the approaching Jeep as the driver, Cresent Jay Nichols, 54, passed through a green light. Gonzalez was hit and died at the scene.

Authorities withheld Gonzalez' name until Wednesday, after troopers notified his next-of-kin in Guatemala. The crash remained under investigation.
