ST. PETERSBURG — Two drivers were badly injured early Sunday when one of them drove the wrong way on Interstate 275 toward the Howard Frankland Bridge, authorities said.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Jessica Lauren Hicks, 21, of Plant City, was driving a 2012 Scion north in the interstate's southbound lanes near the Fourth Street N exit about 6 a.m.
Jon Zimmerman, 29, of Morton, Ill., was traveling south in a 2013 Nissan and saw the other car coming at him. He swerved to the right, the patrol said, but could not avoid a collision.
Both were taken to Bayfront Medical Center in serious condition. Both were using seat belts.
It has not been determined just where Hicks got on I-275 going the wrong way, a patrol spokesman said. No charges had been announced and the crash remained under investigation.
