LARGO — A 7-year-old boy was thrown from a car in a head-on crash on Starkey Road, and both he and a 6-year-old boy were in critical condition Sunday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Both boys were riding in a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox that 32-year-old Karen Thaxton of Seminole was driving north in the outside lane of Starkey Road shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Equinox had minimal tread on its tires, and troopers said it lost control when it passed over standing water just south of 102nd Avenue N, then crossed the median and crashed into a 2001 Toyota Rav4.

Both boys were wearing seat belts, troopers said, and both were taken to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. Their identifications were being withheld Sunday night while law enforcement contacted their relatives.

Thaxton suffered minor injuries and was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. Micah Callahan of Jacksonville, the 26-year-old the driver of the Rav4, was unhurt.
