Two dead in Polk County collision of train, SUV

BARTOW — Two people were killed after a car collided with a train near State Road 37 Sunday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported about 11:30 p.m. on Ewell Road. A Nissan Pathfinder was heading west on the road approaching some railroad tracks when the crossing gate began to flash.

The Nissan failed to stop and struck a CSX train hauling 75 cars and two engines, troopers said. After the impact, the Nissan struck a railroad control junction box and caught fire.

The two occupants of the car died at the scene, troopers said. Their identities have not been released.

The conductors of the train, Thomas R. Krutulius and Jason Vaughn, both of Tampa, were not hurt.

An investigation remained under way Monday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol asks any witnesses of the crash to call the agency at (863) 413-3510.
