Two die when motorcycle struck from behind in Wimauma

WIMAUMA — Two people on a motorcycle were killed Monday when they were struck from behind by a pick-up truck near State Road 674 and Balm Wimauma Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Michael Earnest Newman, 60, and Karen Elizabeth Neal, 59, both of Ruskin died Monday when their motorcycle collided with a pick-up truck driven by 18-year-old Stephen Ross Highsmith, troopers said.

Troopers said the motorcycle was headed west on SR 674 when it began to slow to make a right turn into a driveway. Highsmith, who was traveling behind the motorcycle, failed to slow down and struck the pair from behind. Neither rider was wearing a helmet, the patrol said.

The crash remains under investigation.
