DOVER — A man and a woman from Plant City were killed early Thursday, when a pickup broadsided their motorcycle, state troopers said.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the motorcycle was driving south on McIntosh Road just before 1:30 a.m.
The light turned red, but driver Brian Douglas Rhoades, 35, did not stop, officials said.
As the motorcycle entered the Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard Jr. intersection, it was hit by a 2005 Dodge pickup that was driving east on MLK Boulevard, officials said.
The pickup had a green light, troopers said.
The truck hit the right side of the motorcycle, throwing it, Rhoades and his passenger, Jennifer Jean Rainbolt , 39, onto the grassy shoulder of the road, where they hit a traffic control box, troopers said.
The impact of the crash "destroyed the control box," cutting off power to the traffic signals at that intersection, said FHP spokesman Steve Gaskins.
Rhoades and Rainbolt were both pronounced dead at the scene. Neither had been wearing a helmet.
The pickup driver, David Shawn Colby, 47, of Dover and passenger Karen Marie Raburn, 39, of Brandon suffered minor injuries.
An investigation remained under way Thursday.
