Two members of violent crimes task force injured in St. Petersburg crash

ST. PETERSBURG — Two members of a violent crimes task force were injured Thursday night while on a routine patrol, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

The crash happened about 10:30 p.m. near 18th Avenue S and 19th Street S.

St. Petersburg police officer Doug Weaver and Pinellas sheriff's deputy Chris Platt were eastbound on 18th Avenue S in a marked St. Petersburg police cruiser when a westbound van with four people inside turned in front of them.

Weaver and Platt were taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where they were treated and released. Weaver, who also serves on the St. Petersburg SWAT team, received the medal of valor for his actions in a Jan. 24 shoot-out that claimed the lives of two of the city's officers.

The unidentified people in the other van did not suffer serious injuries.

Police are investigating the crash.
