Valrico woman dies in east Hillsborough crash

VALRICO — An 84-year-old Valrico woman died Tuesday night after the car she was riding in ran a red light and crashed into another car, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

Harry B. Smith, 86, was northbound on Miller Road at State Road 60 about 6:30 p.m. when he missed the red light and turned left onto the highway, the Highway Patrol said.

A Honda driven by Janice Mackey, 51, of Valrico hit the passenger's side of Smith's Lexus.

Mary B. Smith, who was in the passenger's seat, was pronounced dead at Tampa General Hospital, the patrol said.

Harry Smith and Mackey were in serious condition.

All involved were wearing seat belts, and troopers did not think the crash was alcohol-related.

Attempts to reach relatives of the Smiths on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Records indicate they recently started renting a Valrico home. Neighbors said they'd see the couple occasionally but didn't know them well.
