Van accelerates and strikes man, venue

An elderly man who had gotten out of a van to help his wife, the driver, was struck when the vehicle accelerated.

The van, with a dozen volunteers inside, then crashed into the southeast side of Ruth Eckerd Hall just before 6 p.m. Monday. The man, George Arthur Schram, 85, of Dunedin was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

He had been trying to return to the passenger side after assisting his wife, Louise Virginia Schram, 81, with the van's gears when he was hit.

No one else was injured, police said, and the building on McMullen-Booth Road was not structurally damaged.
