Vehicle fire closes westbound Interstate 4 lanes in Tampa

A truck driver is in serious condition after his vehicle toppled over and ignited a fire on Interstate 4 on Monday afternoon.

The fire began when the driver of a westbound truck that carried tar reportedly lost control and wrecked into the outside shoulder, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol. The truck then overturned and caught fire, according to the report.

The fire was reported at the 21st Street exit, according to social media posts just after 4:30 p.m. from the Florida Department of Transportation.

The truck driver, Shameek Wright, 56, of Largo, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries, according to the report.

First responders kept westbound lanes of I-4 closed for more than two hours, according to the report. Charges are pending, as of Monday evening.
