Veteran Hillsborough firefighter dies in N.C.

TAMPA — A longtime Hillsborough County firefighter died Friday in North Carolina when his car slid down an embankment during a winter storm, authorities said.

Joseph Anthony Pipitone, 52, of Waynesville was hired by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue in July 1991 and promoted to a driver-engineer in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle, and three children.

Pipitone will have a traditional firefighter funeral from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 5221 Himes Ave. His interment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, 4207 East Lake Ave.
