Water scooter explodes near Snell Isle, injures 21-year-old man

ST. PETERSBURG — A 21-year-old Kissimmee man was injured Thursday after the water scooter he was riding exploded near Snell Isle and launched him into the water.

Pedro A. Velez turned off the 2004 Kawasaki near the entrance of Smack's Bayou as he waited for a friend to catch up, St. Petersburg police said. When he re-started the scooter — which belonged to a friend — it blew up and caught fire.

St. Petersburg firefighters and a nearby boater pulled Velez from the water, police said. He was taken to Bayfront Hospital with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening.

Officers believe the explosion was caused by a leak in the fuel system.
