CLEARWATER — A 62-year-old woman drowned in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday while out for an evening swim with her husband.
As the two swam, the husband noticed the current seemed to have gotten stronger, and he decided to go back to shore. Of the two, she was the stronger swimmer, he later told authorities.
A Clearwater Fire & Rescue boat had been conducting dive training nearby for police and firefighters, and the crew found the woman's body about 100 yards offshore.
Rescue workers began CPR. After the boat docked, the woman was rushed to Morton Plant Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The woman was from Clearwater. Her name was not released Monday pending notification of her family.
The drowning occurred about 7:30 p.m., in water near the Palm Pavilion.
