Woman hit, killed by SUV in Port Richey parking lot

PORT RICHEY — An 84-year-old woman was hit and killed Wednesday morning by a car backing out of a parking space at an eye care center.

Florence Kruysman Simon was walking in the parking lot at Linsey Eyecare, 8936 U.S. 19, about 10:50 a.m. when a Chevy Tahoe backed into her, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The driver of the Tahoe, 33-year-old Shawna C. Parker of Hudson, "failed to observe" the pedestrian, the FHP report said.

Simon, of Hudson, died at the scene.

FHP is investigating to determine whether charges will be filed.

This is the second time this month that an older woman has died in Pasco County after being hit by a car backing out of a parking space.

On March 3, Nitza Loyola-Smith, 65, of Port Richey, was hit by a driver outside the Publix at Ridge Road and Regency Park Boulevard. She was hospitalized and died last week from her injuries. FHP cited driver Laverne Nathaniel Mills, 69, of Port Richey, for improper backing, and has turned over the case to its traffic homicide division.
