Woman killed on U.S. 19 in Tarpon Springs

TARPON SPRINGS — A 45-year-old woman pushing a bicycle across U.S. 19 in Tarpon Springs was struck by a car and killed Monday evening, police said.

It happened just south of Dr. Martin Luther King Drive at 7:21 p.m., according to Tarpon Springs Police. The victim, who lived nearby, was not immediately identified because relatives had not been notified.

She was crossing the from east to west on the roadway when she was struck by a 1995 Mercury that was going south, said Lt. Barb Templeton. The woman was pronounced dead at Helen Ellis Hospital.

The driver told police he simply didn't see the woman, who stands under five feet tall, Templeton said. The driver and a passenger in his vehicle were unhurt.

No charges were announced. U.S. 19 was closed in both directions for several hours as police investigated.
