CLEARWATER — The Pinellas County Health Department has issued a timely warning just before the Fourth of July weekend: the waters off Courtney Campbell Beach may be too dangerous to swim in.
Fecal coliform has been discovered in the water there. So the county is declaring the area a "potential health risk" to swimmers and anyone else hoping to enjoy the beach this weekend.
The discovery of enteric bacteria in the water indicates fecal pollution, according to the department, which could have come from stormwater run-off, animals or sewage. The bacteria can lead to disease, infections or rash, the department said.
The samples were taken on June 29 and again on Wednesday. New samples will be taken next week, and the results should be available at the end of next week.
