ST. PETERSBURG — The family of a bicyclist who was hit by a car Monday is offering a reward to anyone with information about the driver who fled the scene.
Heading to work on a blue Fuji bicycle about 5 a.m. Monday, Harry J. Carvalis, 56, was westbound in the bicycle lane of 30th Avenue N near 31st Street N when a vehicle struck his rear tire, police said.
Carvalis was thrown from the bike and landed on the pavement. He pulled himself off the road as cars sped by and the driver continued west.
The car is described only as a sedan, and there are no known witnesses. Police found small parts of the vehicle at the scene, including a headlight cover.
The crash happened while it was still dark, but police said Carvalis' bike had lights on the front and back. Carvalis broke several bones and fractured his pelvis. He had surgery Wednesday, police said.
Carvalis recently retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked as a letter carrier for 33 years. On Monday he was headed to his new job at a family business near 32nd Avenue N and 29th Street.
Anyone with information should call Carvalis' brother, Rick, at (727) 641-6610. The family is offering a $2,000 reward for information that would lead to the driver's arrest.
