Detours: a country in search of direction
On the eve of the election, a reporter and photographer set out for Washington, via America. We tell stories from seven towns, touching on seven issues from politics and real life.
Friday Night Rewind It doesn't matter which team you cheer for. We've got video previews of every high school football program in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando County.
A Florida Highway Patrol campaign encourages bikers to ditch black leather for bright colors.
BROOKSVILLE — Perched on a stool at Crossroads Bar & Grill, Larry Obonnon stroked his handlebar mustache and looked over several fliers for a state campaign encouraging motorcyclists to wear brighter colors.
One flier, titled "Green Eyed Monster,'' featured a man wearing shades, a black leather jacket and, stunningly, neon green chaps. Obonnon shook his head in disgust.
"I've been riding since the 1960s," said the gray-haired Obonnon, clutching a Budweiser, "and this stuff here ain't going to change a thing.''
The Florida Highway Patrol never expected that its "Ride Proud. Dress Loud'' safety campaign would persuade all bikers to adorn themselves in brightly colored chaps. But the patrol says one of the greatest dangers to bikers is other motorists who don't see them.
"We want motorcyclists to be visible, because they've got a lot at stake," said patrol spokesman Capt. Mark Welch.
The campaign, which launched Monday and runs through September, encourages riders to avoid black, gray, beige and other neutral colors. It is a response to the spiking number of motorcycle fatalities as more bikers have taken to the road because of rising fuel costs.
In 2006, the most recent data available, 521 Florida motorcyclists were killed on the road, up from 441 in 2005.
Officials are optimistic the campaign will reduce that number. But in a state where helmets are optional, they may have an uphill battle.
"I've got black chaps, black vest, black T-shirts, black shoes," said 62-year-old Gary Dove, sipping on a cup of beer Wednesday night outside Quaker Steak and Lube on 49th Street N in Pinellas Park. "I support the Florida Highway Patrol, but I certainly wouldn't wear vibrant green chaps."
Neither would Larry Diehl, 52, of Seminole, among the dozens of motorcyclists parked outside Quaker Steak.
"In the spirit of riding a motorcycle, I think we should be able to go out like anybody else that drives a vehicle and wear what we want to wear," he said, while walking around with his son, Charlie.
Not everyone shuns brighter colors.
"I want somebody to see me when I'm on the back of my old man's bike because I don't want to get hit first," said Rusty Wilson, a bartender at Tail Gaters sports bar north of Weeki Wachee.
"I won't wear chaps," said Tail Gaters patron Billy Dalton, who usually wears black and avoids helmets. "You know what that looks like? That looks like somebody at the Village People."
Interestingly, the FHP won't be following its own advice.
Patrol officers will still wear taupe uniforms and ride tan and black bikes.
"You hate to say it's different,'' said Welch, noting troopers have more training than recreational bikers, "but it is.''

Won't wear bright colors, then don't pitch a damn fit when you become a hood ornament some night, its just hard to see them, plain as that.

Perhaps more drivers will notice when there are less cars on the road, and more bikes (etc) due to the gas issues we're all going through. Imagine...80 bikes and a car or two at a light...in everyday traffic. Ah...that'd be nice. They'd notice then.

It's an age-old argument. There'll always be some stupid people in cars and on motorcycles. It's survival of the fittest out on the road, either be safe or take risks.

Dave, No wheelies but kids in the "civics" are just as bad. The solution would involve requiring insurance and enforcing it. Kids and drunks can't afford the insurance it would take to ride. As for cars. HANG UP THE PHONE AND PAY ATTENTION!

Clothing aside, FHP and police should concentrate more on innatentive, reckless drivers. Personally, I've had innumerable close calls from old timers than any other group. Motorcyclists, unless they're speeding, usually don't cause the accident

If they can't see the headlight they won't be able to see anyone in drag either.

The one thing everyone interviewed had in common was they were drinking. Maybe these clowns should stop drinking and riding. Ride sober and you will greatly reduce your risk of injury or death. Not to mention they should be wearing helments.

Why not encourage the 4 wheel clods to actually drive instead of reading, cell phone, shaving, make up, eating, drinking, texting, flossing, playing with the kids, feeding the baby...etc.

I ALWAYS wear a helmet and I NEVER drink and ride. I ride as if I am invisible and I ride safely. But I still have idiots tailgating me and I still get cut off--stupid driving is not limited to any type of vehicle!

"Respect" & "Caution" is what every driver no matter what they are driving neet to use. It is after all a privilege not a right to drive.

If the slow people used the right lane and the passing lane was used only for passing, the world would be a much safer place. Anyone beyond the age of 70 should have there license revoked. P.S. You spelled Tail Gators wrong.

All of you, that think it is the bikers, are IDIOTS. I have seen more people driving cars, in and out of traffic and at high speeds, than I do bikes. Because of a few, all bikers are to blame so you DON'T have to look out for us. How STUPID is that?

If FHP is really interested in Biker safety they would inforce the protective eye wear statute. Sunglasses are illegal saftey goggles are mandatory, helmets are not. i never rode without both am still alive and well after 35 years of riding.

God forbid to be wearing bright colored clothes if you're on a bike. I can't believe some biker's responses here. They'd rather DIE than be seen. Says a lot of their mentality and why I read almost daily of another one getting killed!

Don, I drive a car and have almost had those "failure to yield" accidents several times. Every time, it was because the bike was going way too fast and so I misjudged the room I had to make a left turn as they approached. Bikers need to slow down!

Does that go for FHP bike cops too?
I would like to be able to see them hiding in the bushes when I am speeding

How about DON'T DRINK AND RIDE YOUR MOTORCYCLE. Funny and scary how the "bikers" interviewed were all at a bar. Part of the "biker" lifestyle I guess.?

How about requiring they wear helmets. Driving better would be good too. There are many (not all) that weave in and out of traffic, pass between cars, drive too fast, are inexperienced.

The problem isn't with those who ride cruising type of bikes, it is the brightly colored crotch rockets. I have never had someone on a Harley fly by me like I am standing still. Most of the deaths I have heard of involved a kid on a crotch rocket.

Riders, especially on sport bikes, tend to ride way too fast. Drivers don't look and care more about the cell phone than driving. Please just remember those on the bikes are Human beings and have the same rights as car drivers. Helmet or not.

Headlight modulators, extra lighting - they all help, but you do need to drive as you're invisable and since most of the accidents are caused by a car (failure to yield right of way), start nailing them with stiffer penalties, not a slap on the wrist

FHP why don't you start by wearing these gaudy things and let us know how it works. Ain't catching me dressed like a clown. What a waste of money. Most riders killed are on jap crap or are being stupid. Ride smart and ride proud!

I've had two sets of bikers ride 'between' me and another car on East Lake Rd. We were going 50 mph (speed limit) or slightly more, but that wasn't good enough. I saw (and heard) them fine but it either of the cars had wavered, boom!

Don't think that it's not mandatory..... Once a motorcycle is in an accident it becomes classified as a motor vehicle which must be insurred. I agree with you on the sports bike piece. Too many people out there doing stunts on the open road.

I have been riding a bicycle around Tampa for 25 years. I have reflective trape on the fraim. flashing red lights sides and back, and a light in front. I sware motorests use them to aim by. I have been hit 19 times, wrecking 5 bikes and 3 crash hats.

Helmets will save lives not green chaps.I have been riding 42 years and NEVER ride without a helmet. I had one bad wreck which totaled my bike and would have killed me if I had not been wearing a helmet.

I see bikers just fine and am more careful to keep track of where they are than I am of cars because I know they can be harder to see, since there is less mass there. But I have seen other drivers look right at a biker and cut them off anyway.

It's really a shame that all bikers get a bad rap because some chose to ride dangerously. Not all riders zip in and out of traffic ride fast & hang out in bars. Unfortunately the people that dress & ride safely were not interviewed for this article.

I used to drive ambulances and rescues; as drivers routinely can't see a bright red 13 ton truck with air horns, sirens, and covered with flashing lights, I doubt that dressing like the Village People or Ronald McDonald will help much.

It's not just "not seeing me"; I recently had a kid at an intersection look me right in the eye, wait until I was right up to the intersection, smirk and turn left right in front of me.
