PINELLAS PARK — From inside his Shadow Run apartment, Edwin Nunez heard a man cry for help Saturday night.

Why me? Why me?

An unidentified neighbor heard the screams of a man deranged.

Kill me. Just kill me.

Neighbor Glendale Stephens heard the shouts of a man in pain.

Stop, stop, you're hurting me.

They all heard deadly gunfire late Saturday when their neighbor, 44-year-old Dallas Carter, stepped out of his apartment, a pistol and a rifle in hand, to confront the police.

Pinellas Park police came to Shadow Run Apartments at 12001 Belcher Road, apartment B28, after a caller told a 911 dispatcher at 10:58 p.m. that he was disturbed and armed with a .40-caliber pistol. He said his two children, 8- and 13-year-old boys, were in bed. He hung up when asked his name.

Police tried Carter's cell phone, but their calls went to voice mail. As officers arrived minutes later, and as a negotiator attempted to get in position to speak to him, Carter fired at least 30 rounds from the pistol and a .30-30 hunting rifle. Police said he fired from inside his apartment in various directions.

Soon afterward, the children ran from the apartment. At 11:32 p.m. Carter came out of his apartment with the guns pointing at officers in the breezeway, according to police. The officers ordered him to drop his weapons. When he did not, three officers reportedly fired 10 rounds, killing him.

Pinellas Park police Officers Michael Erwin, Adam Smotrich and Alexandro Aguilar have been placed on administrative leave while investigations by police and the Pinellas Pasco State Attorney's Office continue.

The children are in the custody of Florida Department of Children and Families. Sunday morning, their bikes, one red and one green, were parked on the patio in the broken glass.

"He was just trying to do the best he could by his kids," said Melissa Harper, a resident of the apartment complex. "My heart breaks for those boys."

Carter left a note, but police have not released its contents.

Neighbors said Dallas Carter was a single dad who constantly struggled to pay the bills and put food on the table. He had a pronounced limp from a disabling back injury that forced him to use a cane to get around, they said.

"He always talked about needing help — financially and help with the kids," said neighbor Kevin Luster, 23.

Carter lost his job several months ago after he reinjured his back while working, said neighbor Melissa Velez.

Recently, he seemed even more upset. He told neighbors his food stamps had been cut back and he couldn't pay his water bill.

On Saturday, Carter came over to see Velez, 27, who lives across from him. He had an eviction notice with him, she said.

Velez and Luster said the apartment complex requires tenants pay their water bill with their rent.

A few times over the past year, Carter's electricity had been shut off, though he still had power at the time of the shooting, Velez said. When it was off, Velez would let him use her microwave to heat up meals for the children.

Velez said she tried to help the family, most recently bringing over a chicken and rice dinner. This past Christmas, she and her mom bought presents for the kids. They delivered them anonymously, she said, to make sure the boys had a present to open.

"I haven't slept very much because of this," she said.

Neighbor Kna Krajan, 24, said Carter's sons were at her house almost every day to play with her children. Carter was a doting father, she said.

"He wants what's best for his kids, he just doesn't have the finances to do it," she said.

Krajan was home at the time of the shooting and heard the gunshots — one of which hit her screen door.

"He's just been so depressed," she said. "He kept telling us he doesn't know what to do."

Neighbor Laura Miller reached the same conclusion.

"He seemed very, very down, and like he didn't know where to turn next. He didn't know what to do,'' said Miller, 42.

Edwin Nunez said he sat awake with his wife and 6-year-old son, George, as gunfire erupted below them. He told George that the screaming man went to the hospital.

"He's too young to explain it to," Nunez said. "I don't know how to."

hey chris why don't you buy a clue. I'm a cop and until you are faced in a situation like that, you have no room to second guess. Shut your mouth.
by Carol Jul 22, 2008 4:56 PM
To Sandi: We are all struggling but I do not rely on the government to bail me out. Nobody said it is easy raising a family. No get up and get to work!
by Sandi Jul 22, 2008 12:50 PM
to Carol, I do have a second job-I was only talking in generalization-if you can't see people are stuggling in this economy-get a life-I'm not here to argue-simply comment on a sad situation-it's a shame you have to make more out of it than necessary
by mark Jul 22, 2008 12:50 PM
sad to say, there is going to be more and more of this going on.
by chris Jul 22, 2008 12:50 PM
I know i live in the same bldg. But its the swats job to aim for the head and aim for the chest, they dont train to mame or wound, they train to kill , and Dallas got Suicide by COP. With his 8yr old son witness to the whole thing. I feel for him ...
by Chris Jul 22, 2008 12:50 PM
He didnt shoot at police or any other apartments , only a solid cement 8 foot wall and the buildings behind his apartment , and his own porch, all shots from his gun was fired before police arrived ,he told the boys to get out for their safety...
by Chris Jul 22, 2008 12:50 PM
The sad thing is that Shawn the 8 yr old was standing behind the cops as they had their guns drwn on his dad, and was screaming , so tell me why did the cops have to be so close to the front door,so they could say their lives were at risk ,10 shots??
by Ashley Jul 22, 2008 12:50 PM
i feel horrible for all the other families that live at shadow run with young children..i had rtecently moved out of shadow run no less than 2yrs ago..I think a big part of being a parent is to learn how to deal with struggles.its teaching your

that when life gets difficult you must get back up and try try again.. I am very happy that i no longer live there anymore..i think it is no longer a place where young children should live..one of the big reasons why i moved was bc of saftey.

Shoot them in the knee? take cover from potentially armor-piercing bullets? are you serious? Have you ever even picked up a pistol, let alone shoot one? DO NOT EVER EVOKE SCENES FROM THE MOVIES WITH REAL LIFE SITUATIONS!
by burton Jul 21, 2008 8:18 PM
I don't see any complaints from the Uhurus. He must be a white guy.
by Carol Jul 21, 2008 5:23 PM
To Sandi:"there needs to be more help"...Why don't you get a second job? Better yet if you can't afford children then why did you have them. It's not governments job to take care of you and your kids!
by Sal Jul 21, 2008 5:08 PM
This is a very sad story. There is a lesson for all though - "death by cop" is not a good option. He may have thought the kids would be better off but there are other ways. You all sound like caring neighbors - feel no guilt.
by rj Jul 21, 2008 12:51 PM
if he was shooting at the officers they didn't have a choice but to shoot back. I feel sorry for the children.
by Gary Jul 21, 2008 12:51 PM
What are food stamps?
by Lynda Jul 21, 2008 12:51 PM
Was the father aiming his guns at the police? Was shooting the only option. 2children are homeless now. Tough decision for the police? Was it the only one. DA will rule shooting justified regardless. Case is probably closed already.
by John Jul 21, 2008 12:51 PM
Suicide by cop. Very sad for all those that were involved.
by marie Jul 21, 2008 12:51 PM
Yeah, a guy shoots at you and you are going to use tear gas or bean bags? That is a little unrealistic, so the officers lives are worth less than this poor guy?
by Pamela Jul 21, 2008 12:51 PM
Yes, Officers should only arm themselves with paperclips and rubberbands . . . wake up Whipador. Protecting public safety, that's exactly what those officers did. Thank God they are ok and that the kids were unharmed.
by Linda Jul 21, 2008 12:51 PM
It's an awful feeling of helplessness when you see no light at the end of the tunnel. Sad that this man went beyond the breaking point. With this economy, we'll be seeing more of this. My heart goes out to the kids. What an awful loss for them!!!
by Tim Jul 21, 2008 12:50 PM
You are watching too many movies. He had a handgun and a shotgun that he fired 30 times at the police. He was told to drop his weapons and he did not. What happens if the "beanbag" does nothing and he end up killing one of the officers?
by steve Jul 21, 2008 12:50 PM
a shame they had to kill him. There should be another way to resolve. What happened with taking cover and talking. More and more people are in need of help and get none. A shame
by Pete Jul 21, 2008 12:50 PM
Why do they police need to shoot to kill? What a sorry end for this family.See what the Bush economy and Christ's reneging on his campaign promises drives people to? What a shame.
by Steve Jul 21, 2008 12:50 PM
Ummm, Whipador, I am not the police, but if someone is shooting at me, I will probably shoot back - and not with bean bags. What is the matter with some of you people?????????
by Carol Jul 21, 2008 12:50 PM
Whipador... Next time maybe the police should call YOU to talk to a guy who is armed and shooting at them. Maybe they should have taken him to a movie or something? Ya' know somethin' Whip..., maybe, just maybe, you have NO IDEA... Geez.
by John Jul 21, 2008 12:50 PM
Outstanding job, Pinellas Park Police. Whipador, they did try it is called an negotiator. Dallas Carter made the call and did not want to live. Suicide by cop. The only person that could have changed the out come was Dallas Carter.
by Katarina Jul 21, 2008 12:50 PM
I know he drew on the police officers, and Im so happy they are safe, but once again, shoot em in the knee, or the arm. They would drop the gun. Same as the black youth in SP at party. Why shoot to kill? I guess though you have to protect yourself.
by Tommy Jul 21, 2008 12:49 PM
To: Whipador You don't confront lethal force (aka 30 rounds from a handgun and rifle) with less lethal options. But thanks for your uneducated comments.
by Dawn Jul 21, 2008 12:49 PM
The guy had a gun, you can't risk an officer's life even for a "mental" person. The guy is actively shooting the police, you have to shoot back. Ask any police officer.
by Clw Mom Jul 21, 2008 12:49 PM
Brace yourselves: with this economy, these stories will only increase. I hope we can find a way to come together and spare some of these victims -- the distraught parents, the officers, the CHILDREN ...
by Sandi Jul 21, 2008 12:49 PM
This is really a sad situation but one we will probably see more of,it is hard to be a single parent, with the prices of everything going up but income,it is hard to survive. It is a sad ending for all involved. There needs to be more help available.
by Bill Jul 21, 2008 12:49 PM
Non lethal, bean bags?? Are you serious!! He is shooting out his apt. A hunting rifle bullet can go thru walls. What if he killed a neighbors child or yours?. Then you would wonder why the cops did not stop him. Sometimes deadly force is needed
by Jason A. Jul 21, 2008 12:49 PM
Whipador - When a person has a high powered rifle and a hand gun pointed at you, you do not try and taze or tear gas him since he can still squeeze the trigger. If he had shot a person, you would be screaming the cops shoulda done more!
by missy Jul 21, 2008 12:49 PM
the police should not have worried about finding a non-lethal way; you go at police with a gun, you get shot. better than our boys in blue.
