ST. PETERSBURG — A woman jumped off the highest portion of the Sunshine Skyway bridge and lived Sunday evening.

Gina Rue, 43, fell the 197 feet from the center span above Tampa Bay at 5:15 p.m. Boaters alerted a nearby U.S. Coast Guard unit, which pulled Rue out of the water and brought her ashore.

She was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with serious injuries, including back pain and facial lacerations. But Rue was expected to survive, said St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Lt. Joel Granata.

The Coast Guard unit was only about 200 yards away from where Rue splashed into the water. They were preparing to board another vessel at the time.

"We just happened to be at the right place at the right time," said Shawn Fitchko, 29, a boatswain's mate second class on the unit.

Fitchko said Rue was clutching a floating seat cushion that a boater had tossed to her when the Coast Guard vessel reached her.

He said Rue, who was wearing jeans and a T-shirt, was alert and was able to move her fingers and toes. He talked to her to try to keep her conscious.

"She was wondering why she was alive, actually," he said.

People don't often survive a jump from the high span of the bridge, but it has happened on rare occasions.

Updated statistics weren't available Sunday, but a St. Petersburg Times article in 2003 reported that at least 127 people had died jumping from the bridge since it opened in April 1987, making it one of the most-used bridges for suicide in the nation.

A Times article a year earlier stated that only about a half-dozen people had survived the fall. Famously, a Rottweiler named Shasta also survived the jump in 1998 when she was either carried by or followed her suicidal owner over the edge. The man died.

People who make the jump hit the water in about 3.5 seconds going about 75 mph. The impact typically breaks bones and ruptures organs. Even if the impact doesn't kill them, people are knocked unconscious and drown.

Over the last decade, the Times has interviewed two people who survived the jump. Both said they regretted the decision to jump just before they hit the water. The impact was so violent that it ripped off of their clothes.

One survivor, whose bowels were ruptured and back broken, described the feeling as like crashing through a wooden deck. A nearby boater rescued her.

The other survivor suffered a collapsed lung, broken ribs, ruptured spleen and fractured vertebra in his neck. He swam to nearby rocks and was rescued.

Over the years, state officials have taken steps to try to prevent people from jumping, including installing crisis phones and assigning Florida Highway Patrol troopers to patrol the bridge for potential jumpers.

This is amazing "ST. PETERSBURG ? A woman jumped off the highest portion of the Sunshine Skyway bridge and lived Sunday evening." This opening is upside down. What was she doing before Sunday evening? "...bridge Sunday Evening, and lived."
by KC Oct 2, 2008 5:24 PM
She jumped and suffered serious injuries like back pain? Back Pain? Who wrote this? Back pain is not an injury, back pain is a symptom of an injury and back pain in no way makes the injury serious. What is serious is the way this was written

Watch the movie "Its A Wonderful Life" before you decide to jump. No problem is worth losing your life over intentionally. What an embarrassment for your kids/family to live with.
by TANYA Oct 2, 2008 3:35 PM
WOW, THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NO COMPASSION FOR THIS POOR WOMAN, WHAT A BURDEN TO SOCIETY YOU ARE! THE SHAME YOUR PARENTS MUST ENDURE, FOR RAISING SUCH HEARTLESS INDIVIDUALS! THANK GOD YOUR ALL NOT A PART OF MY FAMILY...I HOPE YOU DON'T HAVE KIDS....
by Nicole Oct 1, 2008 4:51 PM
Im sorry people have to be so cruel...some people just need help... I hope you recover soon and get better. You have so much to live for..
by ken Oct 1, 2008 2:09 PM
she lived because we can't afford to lose any perfectly good taxpayers. wasn't she thinking of everyone else's children that need that money?
by Linda Oct 1, 2008 1:27 PM
So Gayle, How do you stand on child abuse, poverty, homeless, etc.? Not a public problem, or not your problem? I hope no one ever has the misfortune of choking or having a heart attack w/ only you around to help.

Gina Rue, We are very glad you survived your fall. God bless You. You have been given Your Life back!
by Cindy Oct 1, 2008 1:27 PM
I think that these falls can be prevented by placing some type of netting that would prevent people from committing suicide off the bridge, and hold them safely until they could be rescued and taken for treatment.

ONLY Jesus can give you peace to stand in your day of trial

I just read about Gina, how tragic that she wanted to end her life. Hang in there life is good sometimes it takes time to get over bad things that happen but, have faith , Pray, and LIVE....It really is a wonderful thing to enjoy life. Laugh often

I can't believe the amount of lack of compassion for another person and their life. One reason people get that depressed is because they are surrounded by awful people.

I Just Heard About Gina Rue 43. IME Glad She Is Still Alive. I Worked on The Skyway From 83 To 87 Pre-Cast Segmental Bridge Erector-Ironworker.This Is My 27Th Year In The Trade. Life IS To Short to Jump Off Bridges. Thinking Of You Gina Rue.God Loves

There is no fence because it would act like a sail and the bridge would have to close in mild wind. I feel bad for this woman. She tried to end it all, but now if even she wants to live, she will spend her life working pay off medical bills.
by Deb Sep 30, 2008 10:26 AM
It's sad that this was the only way she could see out of her problems. Life is worth living even with all the problems and troubles we in counter
by tricia Sep 30, 2008 10:26 AM
I wonder how much $$ it costs to rescue jumpers. I thought there were sharks under that ENORMOUS SCARY BUT SCENIC bridge.
by Jebediah Sep 29, 2008 8:47 PM
heh, and she thought she had problems before the jump.
by Paul Sep 29, 2008 8:46 PM
i'm glad to hear she's ok. perhaps she'll get some help and get on with her life. there are people out there to help with these types of situations, so don't fret, a bridge doesn't have to be your last choice. be cool, help your fellow human.
by gordon Sep 29, 2008 6:39 PM
I'd rather be out the expense for fishing the dead body out of the water than a fence. It isn't worth the cost, plus its going to deteriorate and then possibly leave the state liable when holes aren't fixed right away. Let 'em jump!!!!
by Mike Sep 29, 2008 4:35 PM
According to the article the referenced,in 16 yrs. 123 people had jumped! And nothing has been done to stop it from happening? Why, because a fence would spoil the viem?
by mike Sep 29, 2008 4:21 PM
Why do they pay the toll b4 they jump?God still needs her around.
by Joe Sep 29, 2008 3:52 PM
Didn't some construction worker just fall off the Skyway and live, too? They just don't make suicide bridges like they used to.
by Jason Sep 29, 2008 3:13 PM
Gayle, maybe the lack of concern for others (in their time of need or not) is why we, as a whole, have financial problems we does. Obviously you're rude remark proves you belong to the masses. Do you goto starbucks for 8$ coffees too?
by trey Sep 29, 2008 2:46 PM
FAIL.
by Vance Sep 29, 2008 2:44 PM
If people want to "check out," it's their business, but doing it in a way that inconveniences others and incurs considerable public expense is just plain rude.
by gayle Sep 29, 2008 1:46 PM
Because jason, suicide is NOT a public problem - not when it's impossible to hit anyone, or cause costly road closures. Keep trying and I'm sure you'll come up with other idiotic ways to waste money we don't have.
by Maria Sep 29, 2008 1:46 PM
It makes me sick to see the suicide hotline number. I called it in my darkest moments and the guy was so incredibly rude to me and talking to me like I didn't matter.
by tricia Sep 29, 2008 1:46 PM
She jumps to die and some do gooder saves her...hope she doesn't sue you for ruining her exit! In Syracuse a family is trying to blame Carousel Mall because their adult son jumped & died... They want the mall to install safety nets...
by Gilbert Sep 29, 2008 1:46 PM
A grim sobering reminder of troubled minds!
by Jason Sep 29, 2008 1:19 PM
Why isn't there a fence that arcs back toward the roadway? Sure it would be a pain to install, but unless spiderman wants to jump off, itll be hard to scale the fence. Not to mention people will have a chance to stop them.
by Charlie Sep 29, 2008 1:19 PM
They regretted the decision to jump off the bridge just before they hit the water? What a revelation! I always wondered how bad things needed to be for someone to jump off a bridge.
