Authorities investigating death of man in Green Swamp

DADE CITY — Authorities are investigating the death of a Sarasota man whose body was found Monday evening in the Green Swamp.

A relative called authorities about 4:30 p.m. Monday after David D. Smowton, 56, had not returned from a weekend hunting trip, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The man's brother told authorities that Smowton left Saturday to hunt small game in the Green Swamp.

Fish and Wildlife officers and Pasco sheriff's deputies conducted an extensive search that evening of the 34,335-acre Green Swamp West Wildlife Management Area. An officer on an all-terrain vehicle found Smowton's body about a mile from his vehicle, which had been parked off Main Line in Green Swamp West.

Smowton's death may have been caused by a medical incident. The Pasco County Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation to determine what happened.
