Body found in waters near Mahaffey Theater

ST. PETERSBURG — The body of a 73-year-old man was found Thursday evening floating in the waters across the street from the Mahaffey Theater.

A passerby saw the man's body about 5:15 p.m. off the 300 block of Bayshore Drive SE and called authorities, St. Petersburg police said.

The dead man, who is from St. Petersburg, did not appear to have been in the water long, said police spokesman Mike Puetz. He was wearing a jogging-type outfit and had identification on him. Police did not release his name Thursday evening because they had not yet found his family.

Police said there were no obvious signs of trauma to the man's body.

An investigation was ongoing Thursday night.
