TAMPA — A 20-year-old Trinity woman crashed and died after she became distracted by a cell phone Friday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred on Interstate 75 near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard just before 2 p.m.

Troopers said Carisa Loraine Herald was northbound on I-75 when she became distracted by a cell phone and failed to stop for vehicles that were stopped ahead. It was unclear how troopers knew she was distracted or whose cell phone it was.

In an attempt to avoid a crash, troopers said she steered from the inside lane to the center lane. She then over-corrected back to the left, troopers said.

The vehicle rotated counter-clockwise and landed on the grass shoulder, where it overturned and went airborne, according to troopers.

Troopers cited careless driving as a contributing factor.

Herald was not wearing a seat belt.

Passenger Brian Paul Boyle, 19, of Cottage Grove, Minn., also was injured in the crash.
