Clearwater man dies in Dunedin motorcycle crash

DUNEDIN — A Clearwater man died Saturday morning after he hit a palm tree and was thrown from his motorcycle.

James T. Johnston, 28, of 1010 Beckett St., was driving his green Kawasaki motorcycle south on Edgewater Drive in Dunedin around 2 a.m. when he steered into oncoming traffic while trying to pass another vehicle, said Marianne Pasha, a Pinellas County sheriff's spokeswoman.

Johnston hit a curb at Edgewater and Lockley Street when he swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle. Johnston, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle and hit the tree.

He was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where he died around 3:30 a.m. Deputies are still investigating the crash.
