Clearwater teen hospitalized after shooting himself

CLEARWATER — Police are investigating what appears to be an accidental shooting.

A 17-year-old boy was taken to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg after shooting himself in "the lower portion of his body" shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday, according to Clearwater police spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts.

The boy, who was not identified, sustained an injury that does not appear to be life threatening, Watts said.

According to Watts, the boy said he was holding the gun for a friend and it accidentally went off as he was putting it into his pocket or waistband.

The shooting took place inside a home at 510 N. Washington Avenue.

"It doesn't appear to be intentional," Watts said.
