Coast Guard airlifts Tarpon Springs fishing boat crew member to hospital

TARPON SPRINGS — A 27-year-old man aboard a fishing boat 67 miles offshore was flown to Tampa General Hospital after he began suffering seizures, Coast Guard officials said.

The fishing vessel Julio Pedro was 67 miles west of Tarpon Springs at about 3:20 p.m. on Thursday when the captain called the Coast Guard to say a crew member was vomiting and suffering seizures.

The Coast Guard launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from its Clearwater base to reach the Julio Pedro. The helicopter lowered a rescue swimmer to help the sick man into a survival suit and hoisted the pair into the helicopter.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment.

The Coast Guard performed more than 300 offshore assists and saved more than 75 lives in 2011, spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Bill Friday said.
