Coast Guard rescues man aboard Carnival cruise ship

ST. PETERSBURG — A 57-year-old man was airlifted by the U.S. Coast Guard Monday morning from a Carnival Fantasy cruise ship about 160 miles southwest of Marco Island off Florida's west coast, officials said.

About 9 a.m., the Coast Guard Sector at St. Petersburg received a call from a Carnival crew member that a passenger was suffering respiratory failure and needed medical help.

A team flew an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to the scene, hoisted the man and his wife aboard and flew them to Tampa General Hospital, where the man received medical attention.

No further information was immediately available.
