After a day of searching, the Coast Guard suspended its effort to find a possible missing parasailer off Redington Beach late Tuesday.

Searchers scanned 270 square miles over the course of several hours, the agency said in a news release. Beachgoers had reported that a motorized parasailer went down offshore about 5:20 p.m. Monday.

One witness said the parasailer hit the water, bobbed for about 10 minutes and then disappeared, according to the Coast Guard.

Indian Shores Police Chief Terry Hughes said in a news release that the person dropped in less than half a mile from land, according to people on the beach at the time.

Hughes said in his release that authorities did not have any details Tuesday morning about the identity of the pilot.
