Crash on Howard Frankland near Tampa ties up traffic

TAMPA — A man from Illinois caused a chain-reaction crash near the Kennedy Boulevard exit of northbound Interstate 275 on Tuesday afternoon that closed three lanes on the Howard Frankland Bridge for hours.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Richard J. Hayes failed to see a Chevrolet Tahoe stopped in front of him and veered to avoid rear-ending the sport utility vehicle.

The front right side of Hayes' Ford Escape hit the rear of the Tahoe and the left side collided with the front of semitrailer truck. Hayes' SUV flipped several times and hit a white Ford F-150. The semi then crashed into a black F-150 pulling a trailer — causing it to jackknife.

Investigators were able to clean up the crash site and re-open the road by 7:30 p.m.

Information about injuries was not yet available.
