LITHIA — A large brush fire in eastern Hillsborough County kept firefighters busy late Sunday. The fire, primarily in the Alafia River State Park, was 500 acres and growing, said fire rescue Chief Craig Lynn.

No injuries were reported and no structures were in danger, Lynn said.

Crews were having a difficult time getting the fire under control because of the challenging terrain, Lynn said. Deep phosphate pits are common throughout the affected area, he said.

Hillsborough Fire Rescue had two battalion chiefs, four engines, one tanker and three brush trucks on the scene. The Division of Forestry had two dozer-plow units.
