Arrest warrant issued for ex-Plant QB Marve in Key West domestic battery

TAMPA — An arrest warrant made public Thursday charges former Plant High School and University of Miami quarterback Robert Marve with domestic battery by strangulation, amid allegations he stomped on his then-girlfriend’s throat in July while vacationing in Key West.

The warrant also said Channing Tomes, the ex-girlfriend, has reported allegations of sexual battery and aggravated battery against Marve to the Tampa Police Department in connection with a May incident in Tampa.

The arrest warrant in the Key West incident was issued Wednesday in Monroe County. Marve was not in the Hillsborough or Monroe county jails as of late Thursday.

Tomes, 27, filed for a restraining order in Hillsborough Circuit Court on Monday, describing both incidents. That petition, separate from the criminal investigations, is scheduled to go before a judge July 19.

"When asked why she didn’t call the police and report the (Key West) incident, Tomes said Marve threatened that he was going to kill himself when they got back to Tampa if she called the police," Key West police Detective Darnell Sealey II wrote in the arrest affidavit.

"Tomes said she did not want Marve to kill himself, so she did not notify the police and Marve came up with a lie to tell people who asked about her injuries and bruising."

Tomes has spoken publicly about her allegations, on social media and in text exchanges with the Tampa Bay Times.

Marve’s attorney Daniel Fernandez said his client denies the allegations.

Marve, 29, is the athletic director at Tampa Sports Academy. Until this week, he was co-owner of the Kaleo/Marve Quarterback Academy in Tampa, but John Kaleo, who runs the academy, said Thursday that Marve had left.

Marve also had been working with quarterbacks at his high school alma mater, but Plant coach Robert Weiner said Thursday that Marve will not be on his staff "at this time."

"Obviously we care for all the people involved and all the issues involved in this matter," Weiner said. "We will allow the legal process to take its course and respond appropriately."

Marve’s father, Eugene, played 11 seasons in the NFL, including four with the Bucs.

Robert Marve, who was the state’s top high school football player in 2006, began dating Tomes five months ago, his attorney said.

On or about May 20, Marve bit Tomes’ lip at a club and struck her in the face while taking her to his truck, Tomes’ Hillsborough County petition for protection against dating violence said.

Marve, about 6 feet 1 and 225 pounds, tore off her clothes and continued to beat her on the way to his home on El Prado Boulevard in Tampa, the petition said. Tomes said he took her inside and sexually assaulted her.

Then, on July 7, a deputy reported seeing Tomes at the Key West airport with "bruises all over her face, neck and legs." Tomes’ mother told authorities that her daughter was battered by Marve in Key West. The mother feared for her daughter’s safety, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.

Tomes, who lives in Brandon, gave the deputy a written statement about what happened in their room at La Concha Hotel & Spa in Key West, including the description of him stomping on her throat. The deputy allowed Tomes to board the airplane but detained Marve at the terminal. He was later permitted to leave.
