PLANT CITY— A 30-year-old registered sex offender is back in jail after he was accused of traveling to another county and engaging in a sex act with an 11-year-old girl, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives started their investigation Aug. 23 after a woman reported that her daughter made contact with and sent sexually explicit photos to Stephen Michael Roa of Plant City.

Roa was arrested Thursday on a Sarasota County warrant for charges of lewd and lascivious molestation, seducing a minor, traveling to meet a minor and failure to provide his social media information, which is required of sex offenders.

He was picked up by Hillsborough deputies, and was being held in that county’s jail on Friday in lieu of $250,000 bail. The 11-year-old girl was not identified by authorities. According to Sarasota deputies, here’s how the case unfolded:

The girl and Roa met through the video-streaming website Bigo-Live. He claimed to be 19 and that his last name was "Dazaras," deputies said The conversation then shifted to Snapchat and text messages.

The two arranged to meet in an undisclosed parking lot along the girl’s walk to school on Aug. 22. They engaged in a sex act, deputies said.

Text messages show that Roa and the girl were planning to meet another time, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Roa is a registered sex offender following an arrest in 2011 for lewd or lascivious exhibition involving a victim under the age of 16. He received 10 years of probation, which ended early in February 2016.

The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging parents to be aware what social media apps their children are downloading and how they can be used to contact them.
