FHP: Fleeing wrong-way driver on I-75 rams trooper’s car

A Bradenton man faces a number of charges after he was accused of driving the wrong way on U.S. 41 near the Hillsborough-Manatee county line on Thursday morning and ramming into a state trooper’s car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Around 5 a.m., Joseph R. Neumair, 34, was spotted driving a 2011 Nissan Rogue north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 75, the Highway Patrol said. Neumair exited I-75 at Gibsonton Road heading west.

When troopers tried to stop Neumair at U.S 41 and Gibsonton Road, he threw the car into reverse and rammed the trooper’s car, the Highway Patrol said.

Neumair fled south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 41, trying to elude troopers. He tried to ram other patrol cars as he drove, the Highway Patrol said. He was stopped at the intersection of U.S. 41 and 105 Street SE.

Neumair was taken into custody and faces charges of fleeing and eluding, driving under the influence, DUI property damage, reckless driving and aggravated battery.

Neumair, who refused to consent to a blood-alcohol test, is being held at the Hillsborough County Jail in lieu of $16,750 bail.
