Lakewood High in St. Petersburg was placed on lockdown Monday morning following reports of a weapon on campus, but the threat was later downgraded and the school was placed in lockout status instead.

St. Petersburg Police spokeswoman Sandra Bentil said the police received a report of a weapon at 9:37 a.m. She said police are searching for it. A lockdown was called around 9:45 a.m., meaning students and staff were required to stay at their locations within the school.

Under the lockout, they are allowed to move from class to class but no one is allowed into the school.

Pinellas County Schools spokeswoman Lisa Wolf sent out a message to Lakewood High parents asking them to refrain from traveling to the school as police "(investigate) a safety threat."
