Pasco Sheriff’s Office: Holiday woman arrested after dog attacks passerby, deputy

HOLIDAY — A 31-year-old woman was arrested Saturday after the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office said she unleashed her St. Bernard on one person and then on a responding deputy, who shot the dog.

Gloria Dean Smith faces a charge of aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

The incident occurred on Trafford Road in Holiday about 1 p.m. Here’s what deputies said happened:

Two people were walking in front of Smith’s home when the woman saw them and opened the door to her home.

Then, deputies said, she stepped to the side and allowed her St. Bernard dog out. "Get him!" she said, according to deputies, and the dog charged at one of the passersby, jumping on him and biting him multiple times.

The dog stopped and walked away, deputies said, before it rushed back and attacked again, leaving bite marks on the victim’s buttocks and left hand and scratches on his chest and lower back.

Eventually, deputies said, Smith retrieved the dog and pulled it back inside.

A deputy arrived at the house, knocked on the door and received no response. But as the deputy walked back to his vehicle, Smith opened the front door, stepped to the side and let the dog out again, according to an arrest report.

The dog charged at the deputy and growled, the report said, and he fired two shots at it, striking it in the ear and mouth. The incident was captured by a body-worn camera, deputies said.

According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office, the injured animal was taken by Pasco Animal Services for treatment.

Smith was booked on $15,000 bond and released on Monday.
