Pasco man wants to represent himself in neighbor’s death

NEW PORT RICHEY — Qiu Feng Ke told Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Mary Handsel that he wants to represent himself at his upcoming murder trial.

Qiu faces a charge of first-degree murder in the execution-style death of his neighbor on Jan. 23.

The 60-year-old Qiu said little Tuesday morning at his arraignment, but stood tall with a clean-shaven head, wearing round-rimmed glasses.

For a few minutes of confusion, attorneys spoke with Handsel at the bench about who would represent Qiu. According to court records, Qiu is represented by a public defender, but Handsel said that is temporary.

Qiu will return to the courtroom March 16, when Handsel is expected to rule on his request to represent himself.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office said Qiu, 60, shot and killed his neighbor Edward Lee Tudor, 37, as Tudor kneeled in his front yard at 3519 Richboro Drive in Holiday, begging for his life. The killing was caught on surveillance video from Qiu’s home at 3527 Richboro Drive, deputies said.

At the time, deputies said Qiu explained to them that he intended to shoot and kill Tudor, another unidentified woman and then hang himself, according to the arrest report.

"The defendant said he does not regret shooting the victim and has been planning on killing the victim for a long time," detectives wrote in the report.

Qiu told deputies Tudor did not threaten or attempt to harm him in any way, the arrest report said.

He will continue to be held in the Pasco County jail without bail.
