TAMPA — Coleman Middle School was vandalized with two swastikas first discovered by a passer-by on Sunday, school and police officials said Tuesday.

One, done in red crayon and measuring about 18 inches by 18 inches, was found on the front of the school, which is at 1724 S Manhattan Ave., Sunday morning by the parent of a former student.

Principal Michael Hoskinson told an officer that he had driven by the school about noon Saturday, and did not see the vandalism. By the time the officer had left, Hoskinson had washed the swastika off the building. Police said there did not appear to be any surveillance cameras on the area that would have captured the incident on video.

On Monday, police returned to the school and driving around its perimeter, found a second red crayoned swastika on an outside wall of the gym. School maintenance workers cleaned it and painted over whatever remained. There was no permanent damage, police said.
