TAMPA — Alonso High School has been placed on lockdown as authorities investigate a rumor of a weapon at the school, according to sheriff's officials.
Deputies are searching the school room-by-room based on an unconfirmed report that there may be some kind of weapon, but they have yet to find anything, said sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter.
"There is a vague report that a male student might have a weapon in his backpack," said school district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe. "No one has seen anything for sure… But just to be sure, they have sheriff's deputies going into every classroom and checking."
A female student reported about an hour ago that a male student whom she didn't know approached her and said something about her brother, Cobbe said. As he walked away, she saw what may have been the outline of a weapon in his backpack.
