TEMPLE TERRACE — After officers searched for missing drugs, they arrested one of their own, who is accused of stealing the evidence and keeping it in his car, said a city spokesman.

Zachariah Brown, 33, who has been with the Temple Terrace Police Department since May 2006, has been placed on administrative leave with pay until the investigation is concluded, said Michael Dunn, a spokesman for Temple Terrace.

The drugs oxycodone and Xanax were part of another case, and disappeared a week ago. So the department began an internal investigation.

"They found them in his car," Dunn said.

Brown has been disciplined several times since joining the department three years ago, for infractions such as being tardy for duty, losing credit cards and letting the oil in his patrol car run dry.

Dunn said most recently he was suspended from working extra duty assignments for three months after he failed to report to an extra duty assignment in April.

Brown was booked into the Orient Road Jail on Friday on charges of drug possession, tampering with evidence and petty theft. He was released on $11,750 bail.
