A man is in stable but critical condition this morning after he was shot in the head while trying to buy marijuana, police said.

Daniel G. Caillouet, 26, went to 19th Avenue S and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. about 7:30 p.m. with a friend to buy marijuana last night, said St. Petersburg police spokesman George Kajtsa. They were flagged down by men sitting on a porch at 927 19th Ave. S.

The men discussed the sale and Caillouet and his friend drove their car to an alley to complete the transaction, Kajtsa said. While attempting to pay, Caillouet's friend — his name is not being released because he's a witness — heard someone chamber a round into a handgun.

The friend took off with the vehicle. He heard a gunshot and looked over to see Caillouet shot. Caillouet was taken to BayFront Medical Center.
